Release Date: 31 Mar 2022
'Reimagining Borders’ 48-Hour Film Challenge part of Las Cruces film fest

Among many events planned in conjunction with the 2022 Las Cruces International Film Festival is an opportunity for anyone to make a movie in 48 hours between Feb. 25 and 27, then have it screened during the festival.

The seventh annual LCIFF, presented by New Mexico State University and Visit Las Cruces, will run from March 2-6. NMSU’s Southwest and Border Cultures Institute and NMSU’s Creative Media Institute are partnering with the film festival to offer the “Reimagining Borders” 48-Hour Film Challenge.

Filmmakers may register individually or in teams. The challenge is open to anyone who can write, shoot and edit a short film in 48 hours. Registration costs $10 and is open until the launch of the competition.

The kickoff and mandatory safety meeting is at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25 at Salud de Mesilla, 1800 Avenida de Mesilla, suite B. Filmmakers will have 48 hours to write, shoot and edit a short film. Entries must be delivered on a flash drive (that the team provides) by 6 p.m. Feb. 27 to Kyle Ivy outside Milton Hall.

All films successfully completed for the “Reimagining Borders” 48-Hour Film Challenge and complying with all 48-Hour Challenge rules will screen at the 2022 LCIFF event from 4 to 6 p.m. at Allen Theaters’ Cineport 10. Films created by filmmakers under 18 years old will be screened at 2 p.m. March 6 for an audience award.

Winners will be announced at the LCIFF Award Ceremony at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at the Rio Grande Theatre.

To register, all team members must agree to the following COVID-safe filming rules listed in the online registration form. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in immediate disqualification.

Every participant on a team must fill out a registration form and agree to comply with the rules. Once registered, team members will receive an invitation and Zoom link to the kick-off event by mail. Scholarships are available to waive the $10 fee.
