In the midst of COVID-19 shutting down all in-person university operations, the Associated Students of New Mexico State University are finding creative ways to continue to assist NMSU students and hold the annual ASNMSU election.
The ASNMSU election for president, vice president and college senators began Monday, April 13 and will continue through Friday, April 17.
“Voting has always taken place online, so we simply won’t be able to engage in tabling events during elections week,” said ASNMSU Vice President Melina Burnside. “We will be having a heavy presence on our social media platforms to try to get as much student participation as possible.”
The ASNMSU Senate will complete all of its meetings as planned, but they will be conducted via Zoom. The meeting codes will be shared on social media so anyone who is interested in attending will have access.
All ASNMSU in-person events have been cancelled for the semester including Spring Fling and the Big Event. Employees are presently in the midst of planning a few virtual events for students before the end of the spring semester. As soon as they are finalized, they will be shared on social media.
ASNMSU employees have been working from home since NMSU extended spring break and moved classes online. Each branch has its own group on Microsoft Teams, which assists in communications and staying up to date on tasks.
Many of the services ASNMSU provides rely on campus-member engagement. Reimbursement for passed and signed senate bills as of March 11 can be considered on a case-by-case basis, but they are no longer able to provide reimbursement for travel that occurred after those dates. Additionally, they are still providing Airport Shuttle and Crimson Cab services.
