New Mexico State University has named Jon Boren interim dean of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, following the retirement of Rolando A. Flores Galarza.
NMSU Provost Joseph Bull announced Boren’s appointment in a memo to college staff on Sept. 1. Bull said Boren was picked through a selection process that included feedback and nominations from ACES staff and faculty.
“Jon has substantial knowledge of NMSU, New Mexico and the agriculture industry in the state,” Bull said.
Boren joined NMSU in 1996 as a faculty member and Extension wildlife specialist. He has held numerous leadership roles within the College of ACES, having most recently served as an associate dean and director of the NMSU Cooperative Extension Service since 2008.
“Having spent nearly 30 years at New Mexico State University, I am deeply honored to serve as interim dean of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences,” Boren said. “This college has a long tradition of excellence in teaching, research and Extension, and I look forward to working closely with our faculty, staff, students, alumni and partners as we continue to advance innovative solutions, support our communities, and uphold the land-grant mission that is at the heart of NMSU.”
Boren succeeds Flores Galarza, who retired Aug. 31 after more than 10 years as dean. NMSU will conduct a national search for a permanent dean over the current academic year, with the goal of filling the position before the start of the fall 2027 semester, Bull said.
NMSU’s College of ACES has nine academic departments on the Las Cruces campus, 12 agricultural science centers operated by the Agricultural Experiment Station, and 33 Extension offices in every county.
