Judith Flores Carmona is a professor of multicultural education/critical pedagogies in NMSU’s School of Teacher Preparation, Administration and Leadership in the College of Health, Education and Social Transformation. She is also a faculty fellow for the Honors College. Flores Carmona, a first-generation college student and scholar, was born in Veracruz, Mexico, and raised in south Los Angeles. In 2023, she was promoted to professor in the College of HEST and Honors College.
Flores Carmona has a Ph.D. in sociology of education from the University of Utah and joined NMSU as a faculty member in 2012. Her academic and community work is guided by a sense of responsibility and commitment to social justice. Her research and scholarship include critical pedagogy, critical race feminism, critical multicultural education, and testimonio methodology and pedagogy. Her work has appeared in publications like Qualitative Inquiry, Equity and Excellence in Education, the Journal of Women and Gender in Higher Education, and Chicana/Latina Studies. She is currently the lead editor of Chicana/Latina Studies (C/LS), the Journal of Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social. C/LS is housed at NMSU until Spring 2027.
In January 2025, Flores Carmona received the Distinguished Career Award for Social Sciences and Humanities during NMSU’s spring convocation.
