New Mexico State University’s John T. Harrington Forestry Research Center will host its next field day Aug. 22, featuring presentations by researchers and the center’s partners.
The center is located at 3021 Highway 518 in Mora, New Mexico. This year’s field day will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and feature a come-and-go approach instead of formal presentations to kick off the event. The field day event is free and open to the public.
Attendees will be able to visit booths hosted by key partners to learn about current research, education and overall reforestation efforts across the state. Forestry topics will include forest health issues in the region, nursery methods to improve outplanting success, spatial modeling studies on seedling survival, and status and strategic direction of the New Mexico Reforestation Center.
“Science-based reforestation is one of the most powerful tools we have to fight climate change,” said Owen Burney, research director of the John T. Harrington Forestry Research Center. “But every year, the need for reforestation continues to grow as wildfires, insects and disease damage more of our forests. That’s why it’s so important to invest in and research the full reforestation pipeline – from seed to nurseries to planting – to boost tree survival and support healthy ecosystems and local communities.”
The John T. Harrington Forestry Research Center is the only program in the four corner states that focuses research efforts along the entire reforestation pipeline and is one of only five programs in the U.S. dedicated to researching the reforestation pipeline. The center features programs in forest genetics, nursery systems and outplanting.
