Most of the research at New Mexico State University’s Clayton Livestock Research Center focuses on shipping protocols for cattle, particularly evaluating the health and performance of newly received cattle and nutrition and management from feedlot to slaughter.
The center’s annual field day Monday, Aug. 16, will dig deeper into that research, including projects focusing on Criollo cows, as well as soil health, water intake by newly received beef cattle and ruminally cannulated heifers.
The field day will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m., followed by introductions at 9 a.m. and presentations at 9:15 a.m. The Asombro Institute for Science Education will provide training materials for K-12 teachers on the Criollo cattle, which were first brought to the new world from Spain in 1493, and arrived in New Mexico in 1593.
“We are excited to highlight current research projects along with other ongoing activities associated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s Coordinated Agricultural Projects grant,” said Glenn Duff, superintendent of the Clayton Livestock Research Center. “These activities include K-12 training, Extension, finishing performance and cow behavior, to name a few. We invite the public to come on out and enjoy the presentations and take the opportunity to network again.”
Masks will be required indoors at all time for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. The field day will take place at the Clayton Livestock Research Center, 15 NMSU Lane in Clayton, New Mexico. There is no cost to attend, and lunch will be provided at the conclusion of presentations.
