New Mexico State University’s Aggie Uptown development continues to expand with the addition of White Sands Federal Credit Union, which will celebrate the groundbreaking of its newest branch at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the future site located at 3110 University Ave.

The new WSFCU branch marks another milestone in the continued growth of Aggie Uptown, a vibrant, mixed-use commercial center designed to enhance the NMSU college experience. Aggie Uptown integrates public spaces with academic, professional and residential uses and is positioned to become a hub of activity as well as a significant long-term revenue stream for the university.

“We are incredibly excited to bring White Sands Federal Credit Union to Aggie Uptown and to continue strengthening our great partnership with New Mexico State University,” said Phillip Fifield, CEO of White Sands Federal Credit Union. “This location allows us to better serve NMSU students and faculty, the incredible health care professionals at and around Memorial Medical Center, and the families who live around the A-Mountain area. This is more than a new branch – it’s an investment in the future of our community.”

WSFCU joins a growing list of tenants at Aggie Uptown. Maverik, the first business to open at the site, began operations in late 2023 with a 5,637-square-foot convenience store featuring six dual-sided fuel pumps and two electric vehicle charging stations. The Maverik location occupies the southeast corner of Las Alturas Drive and University Avenue.

Additional development is already underway, with Blake’s Lotaburger expected to follow WSFCU as the next business to break ground in Aggie Uptown. The project has evolved through strategic planning and adaptability.

“Prior to COVID in 2020, Trilogy Health Services had a non-binding letter of intent to build a senior retirement community in Aggie Uptown. But the pandemic caused the Kentucky-based company to stall all its construction projects, and this project never proceeded,” said Scott Eschenbrenner, president and CEO of New Mexico State University’s Aggie Development Incorporated. “We have initiated discussions with a new university-based senior retirement company and hope to have announcements on this effort later this year.”

The addition of White Sands Federal Credit Union reflects NMSU’s ongoing commitment to creating a dynamic campus-adjacent environment that supports students, employees, health care partners and the surrounding community while advancing the university’s long-term financial sustainability.
