NMSU AI Institute among projects highlighted during 1888 Minutes of Giving

The Institute for Applied Practice in AI and Machine Learning is among the projects to be featured during the New Mexico State University Foundation’s 1888 Minutes of Giving campaign, which spans NMSU Founders Day from 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, to 4:28 p.m. Wednesday, April 23.

“In the last 10 years, we have witnessed a quantum leap in this technology,” said Enrico Pontelli, dean of NMSU’s College of Arts and Sciences and senior adviser to the provost for AI. “The mission of the AI Institute is to bring together AI researchers, educators and practitioners at NMSU and lead the region and the state in the application of AI models and technologies to practical solutions that address real-world challenges relevant to New Mexico.”

Through $2 million from the state, NMSU will begin to elevate research and educational capabilities in AI to serve the workforce, research and economic development needs of the state and support state-wide initiatives like the New Mexico AI Consortium. The aim is to establish NMSU as a national leader in applied AI research and inclusive AI education.

The AI Institute is a cutting-edge initiative that will serve as a hub for innovation and learning, providing students with unique development opportunities by bridging the gap between academia and practical applications. Funds raised for the AI Institute will:

  • Provide scholarships and resources to ensure equitable access to AI education.
  • Build state-of-the-art labs and facilities for innovative research.
  • Attract world-class researchers, educators and innovators to contribute their expertise.
  • Develop solutions that address societal and environmental challenges, making a tangible difference in the lives of individuals around the globe.

Gifts made to the AI Institute during NMSU’s 1888 Minutes of Giving will be doubled up to $500,000 thanks to a generous matching gift from NMSU President Valerio Ferme’s office.

Launched in 2024 as part of Founders Day, the 1888 Minutes of Giving campaign honors NMSU’s visionary founders and supports a wide range of initiatives.
