Michael Hout, associate dean of research for the College of Health, Education and Social Transformation at New Mexico State University, has been named editor-in-chief of a prestigious cognitive science and psychology academic journal.
The Psychonomic Society recently announced Hout’s four-year appointment as editor of Attention, Perception and Psychophysics, a journal that encompasses all areas of research in sensory processes, perception, attention and psychophysics. Hout begins his term Jan. 1, 2026.
“AP&P publishes some of the highest quality work in the field of cognitive science and psychology,” Hout said. “It is a journal that is very special to me. In fact, I published my first paper there. I am incredibly excited at the opportunity to lead this journal. I take the responsibility quite seriously and am grateful to be entrusted with this position.”
Hout was named associate dean of research for the College of HEST in July 2024. A professor in psychology and kinesiology, he has been at NMSU for 11 years in various roles, including two years working with the National Science Foundation as a program director affiliated with NMSU. Throughout his time as a faculty member, Hout has led and worked on various research projects and labs.
“Dr. Hout’s esteemed appointment as editor-in-chief of Attention, Perception and Psychophysics is a testament to the respect he has earned as an accomplished scholar and his widely recognized impact in leading numerous research partnerships at NMSU and beyond,” said College of HEST Dean Rick Marlatt. “HEST is incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Hout serving as the college’s associate dean for research and paving the way for innovative collaborations in research, community engagement and economic development.”
