New Mexico State University has earned two new classifications by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education that reflect the university’s commitment to quality education and student success.
Carnegie officials made the announcement Thursday, April 24. NMSU has earned the 2025 Institutional Classification and the 2025 Student Access and Earnings Classification.
“NMSU faculty, staff and administrators continuously work towards meeting our land-grant mission of teaching, research and service,” said Tony Marin, associate vice president for Student Affairs. “Our primary goal is to serve our student population through high-quality instruction and experiential learning experiences in preparation for the workforce. The Carnegie designations reflect the exceptional student body that NMSU has the privilege of serving.”
NMSU joins 99 other institutions in receiving the 2025 Institutional Classification, which is given to every degree-granting institution based on data reported for the 2020 through 2023 academic years. Institutions are classified based on degree types awarded, the subjects in which the institution awards degrees and the size of the institution. NMSU has been classified as Mixed Undergraduate/Graduate-Doctorate Medium, which represents 3% of U.S. colleges and universities in the Institutional Classification.
NMSU also earned the 2025 Student Access and Earnings Classification, which is a new classification that reflects the extent to which an institution enrolls students who reflect the communities the institution serves, and whether its students go on to earn competitive wages compared to peers in their area.
NMSU has been classified as Higher Access, Medium Earnings, which includes 1,321 institutions total. That number represents 43% of U.S. colleges and universities in the overall Student Access and Earnings Classification.
More information about the classifications can be found here. In February, Carnegie announced that NMSU achieved the R1 classification due to its “very high spending and doctorate production.”
