New Mexico State University’s Santa Fe County Cooperative Extension Service will host a land restoration workshop and demonstration Saturday, Aug. 30, at the Santa Fe County Extension office, 3229 Rodeo Rd.

The free event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to landowners managing both small and large properties. Attendees will learn strategies to improve soil health, manage erosion and support long-term sustainability through hands-on activities and live demonstrations.

“This workshop will equip you with practical strategies to reduce wind and water erosion, enhance soil health, and create thriving habitats for wildlife and native pollinators,” said Tom Dominguez, Santa Fe County Extension program director and Extension agent.  “Learn how to become a better steward of your land while contributing to a more resilient and sustainable landscape.”

Hands-on activities will cover soil sampling, infiltration testing, compaction assessments, plant identification and resource evaluations. Participants will observe keyline design and seeding demonstrations. In addition, the workshop will introduce participants to basic monitoring techniques they can apply on their own properties. These include using transects to measure ground cover and evaluating aggregate stability to assess overall soil function.

The event is sponsored by the Santa Fe County Extension office, the New Mexico Department of Agriculture’s Healthy Soil Initiative and the Native Plant Society of New Mexico.

To RSVP, contact Dominguez at 505-471-4711 or tdomingu@nmsu.edu by Aug. 15. Individuals with disabilities who require auxiliary aids or services to participate should also contact Dominguez by that date.
