Each year, New Mexico State University’s Agricultural Experiment Station hosts several field days at its science centers across the state. This year’s first field day will take place June 4 at the Fabián García Science Center in Las Cruces.

This year, the center will highlight topics such as onion breeding/harvest, winemaking, guar, medicinal plants in southern New Mexico, chile pepper breeding and more.

The field day will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. at the center, 113 University Ave. in Las Cruces. Attendees are asked to park at 500 W. College Ave. Lunch will be provided at 11:30 a.m. following tours of the center’s research plots.

“This is the perfect opportunity for our stakeholders and the community at large to come and get a glimpse at our research efforts,” said Dave Lowry, program operation director for the NMSU Agricultural Experiment Station. “Some of our newest projects range from looking into plant species with medicinal properties for a wide range of ailments, a revitalized effort on viticulture and enology, to current and ongoing trials of chile pepper breeding, teaching garden demonstrations, disease resistance in onions as well as mechanical harvesting and dryland restoration efforts emphasizing native New Mexico plant species.”

Lowry said the center has several ongoing, multifaceted projects in areas including water, soil and economics, just to name a few.

NMSU’s Agricultural Experiment Station, which is housed in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, will also host field days in Farmington, Tucumcari, Alcalde, Mora and Los Lunas. At each field day, attendees will get a chance to learn about the centers’ research projects and other topics of interest to the community.
