NMSU Global Campus, City of Las Cruces form workforce partnership

New Mexico State University Global Campus has partnered with the City of Las Cruces to expand education and career advancement opportunities for city employees while supporting long-term workforce readiness across municipal operations.

The collaboration is designed to support city employees in building skills aligned with public service, leadership, technology and business operations through flexible, online education. By leveraging NMSU Global Campus programs, the City of Las Cruces is investing in its workforce readiness to better meet the evolving needs of the community it serves.

The partnership focuses on providing flexible, online education options that align with the needs of a modern municipal workforce. Through NMSU Global Campus, City of Las Cruces employees will have access to preferred tuition rates on online degree programs and professional learning opportunities in areas such as business, public management, information technology, and leadership.

“Investing in our employees is an investment in the future of Las Cruces,” said Ikani Taumoepeau, city manager of Las Cruces. “This partnership supports professional growth, strengthens our internal talent pipeline, and ensures our workforce is prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities facing our community.”

From the university perspective, the collaboration underscores NMSU Global Campus’s mission to serve working professionals and regional employers.

“At NMSU Global Campus, we work closely with organizations to align education with real workforce demands,” said Andrew Sedillo, executive director of Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships. “Partnering with the City of Las Cruces allows us to support public servants with accessible, career-relevant programs while contributing to the long-term vitality of the community.”

The partnership also includes collaboration between NMSU Global Campus and city leadership to identify skill gaps and explore targeted workforce training options, such as microlearning opportunities focused on leadership development, project management and operational efficiency. In addition, the city and NMSU Global Campus will co-host informational sessions to help employees learn about available programs, application processes and academic support services.

The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to workforce development, public service excellence and community impact. By expanding access to education and professional development, the City of Las Cruces and NMSU Global Campus aim to support employee success and enhance the quality of services delivered to residents.
