To provide an enhanced experience for students and the community, New Mexico State University is making some major improvements to the recreation activity center and pool facilities on the Las Cruces campus this summer.
To accommodate these upgrades and associated training needs, the URec Activity Center and pool will be temporarily closed to campus and the community from May 10 to June 7.
The funding for these improvements comes from state appropriations as the result of a $670,000 bond and Associated Students of New Mexico State University’s lobbying efforts in 2023. ASNMSU’s governmental affairs team requested $2 million at the 2023 legislative session for the project as additional funding after the Activity Center had some allocated funds for improvements from the student fee revenue bond.
The planned upgrades include upgraded fitness equipment and refreshed key facility systems, along with a new weight room set to open later this summer. During this time, staff will also receive additional life and safety certifications and training to better support campus operations.
“We’re incredibly proud of the transformation underway at our recreation center, made possible through the dedicated lobbying efforts of ASNMSU student leadership,” said Ann Goodman, associate vice president of student development and dean of students. “This renovation of our aging fitness facilities will deliver a state-of-the-art workout facility and a welcoming study and lounge space, providing students and the community with a refreshed, modern environment to support both physical wellness and campus connection.”
The satellite fitness locations located in campus housing areas will also see some enhancements and will remain open during this time.
AggieFit members will receive a complimentary month at no cost during this closure period. For updates and more information, visit https://recsports.nmsu.edu or contact urec@nmsu.edu.
