Jochebed Ade-Oshifogun, associate professor in the School of Nursing at New Mexico State University, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar award for the 2025-2026 academic year.
This competitive award will support Ade-Oshifogun’s eight-month teaching and curriculum development project at Babcock University in Ilishan, Nigeria, where she will focus on expanding nursing research methods training and building research capacity among faculty and students.
With more than 38 years of international nursing education and research experience, Ade-Oshifogun is well-qualified for this endeavor. Her project, “Expanding Nursing Research Methods Training at Babcock University,” responds to a pressing need in Nigeria, where nursing doctoral education is still relatively new and research programs have traditionally emphasized quantitative methods, with limited exposure to qualitative and mixed-methods research approaches.
“It is an incredible honor to be selected as a Fulbright scholar to Nigeria. This award represents not just a personal milestone, but a profound opportunity to advance global collaboration in nursing education and research, and to help shape the next generation of nurse leaders,” Ade-Oshifogun said.
During her tenure at Babcock University, Ade-Oshifogun will teach graduate-level courses in advanced nursing research and methodology, lead doctoral seminars, and conduct interactive workshops on qualitative research methods for faculty, graduate students, nurse clinicians and researchers in health-related fields. In addition to classroom instruction, she will mentor faculty and graduate students, providing expert thesis and dissertation advising.
“Dr. Ade-Oshifogun’s expertise in research pedagogy, combined with her passion for advancing health equity and social justice, will greatly enrich the academic environment at Babcock University,” said Rick Marlatt, dean of the College of health, Education and Social Transformation, which houses the School of Nursing. “Her commitment to sustainability – through developing online courses, electronic resources, and training local faculty – ensures that the impact of this Fulbright award will continue long after her time in Nigeria.”
A native of Nigeria, Ade-Oshifogun completed her undergraduate nursing education at the University of Ife and has dedicated much of her research to addressing health disparities affecting Nigerian immigrants. Her background uniquely positions her to serve as both a scholar and cultural ambassador during this assignment.
Beyond teaching, Ade-Oshifogun plans to foster long-term partnerships between NMSU and Babcock University, paving the way for future faculty exchanges, joint research projects and visiting scholar opportunities. Upon her return, she intends to share insights from this experience through campus seminars, integrate case studies from her work in Nigeria into NMSU’s curriculum, and continue advancing the School of Nursing’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
“This award creates a unique space for meaningful exchange—sharing the richness of U.S. academic nursing while learning from the remarkable resilience and expertise of Nigerian scholars and practitioners,” Ade-Oshifogun said.
The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, is one of the world’s most prestigious academic exchange programs. Through her project, Ade-Oshifogun will contribute not only to global nursing education but also to NMSU’s mission of fostering inclusive excellence and global engagement.
