Abdu Abdelkefi, a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in New Mexico State University’s College of Engineering, has been elected a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, one of the highest honors awarded by the professional organization.
The ASME Fellow grade recognizes exceptional engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession and to the organization. Abdelkefi joins an elite group within the society, with about 5 percent of fellows among more than 69,000 ASME members worldwide.
In a letter announcing the appointment, Thomas Costabile, executive director and CEO of ASME, noted that the distinction reflects Abdelkefi's notable accomplishments and the meaningful impact of his work within the engineering community.
“The fellow grade of membership recognizes exceptional engineering achievements and contributions to the engineering profession and to ASME,” Costabile said. “By continuing to recognize our outstanding members and elevating them to the grade of fellow, we ensure ASMEs commitment to its vision ‘to be the premier resource for the engineering community globally.”
Abdelkefi’s research focuses on dynamical systems, with particular emphasis on nonlinear dynamics, fluid structure interaction, and energy harvesting. He was recently elected an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In previous studies conducted by Stanford University and Elsevier, he has been ranked among the world’s top 2% of scientists across all fields for both single-year impact and career-long contributions.
Abdelkefis also serves as section editor-in-chief for Drones, associate editor for the Journal of Vibration and Control, and member of the editorial board for Scientific Reports.
“Being elected an ASME Fellow is a privilege that reflects not only my own efforts but also the support of the many colleagues and students with whom I have had the opportunity to work,” Abdelkefi said. “I am proud to contribute to the engineering community through research, mentorship, and service, and this recognition inspires me to continue striving for excellence.”
ASME elevates members to fellow status to recognize outstanding contributions to engineering and to reinforce the organization's mission of serving as a global resource for the engineering community.
“Obtaining this distinguished award recognizes the engineering achievements of Dr. Abdelkefi over his professional career,” said Jay Frankel, department head of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. “It is a great moment for Dr. Abdelkefi, the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, and College of Engineering as the ASME Fellow rank is internationally recognized and respected.”
Founded in 1880, ASME is an international professional organization that promotes the art, science, and practice of multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences around the globe. Fellows are recognized for their leadership, innovation, and lasting contributions to the profession.
Abdelkefi was formally recognized by ASME earlier this year and will receive commemorative certificates acknowledging his new status as a Fellow. To learn more about his work and publications, visit his website, https://mae.nmsu.edu/faculty/dr-abdessattar-abdelkefi.html.
