New Mexico State University’s Campus Tutoring Services has been awarded level 1 and level 2 program certification from the College Reading and Learning Association. Level 1 is a recertification, while level 2 is a new achievement. Both certifications are official through June 2025.
“To hold both a level 1 and level 2 certification for our center, signifies our commitment to NMSU students that they are receiving the highest level of academic support that aligns with NMSU LEADS 2025 of student retention and degree attainment,” said Marci Salinas-Milam, Academic Success Center program director. “Our center, which is peer led, has met CRLA’s highest standards for tutor selection, training and direct services. We are Aggies serving Aggies.”
Located in Corbett Center Student Union, Room 206, Campus Tutoring Services provides a full service-tutoring program offering assistance in more than 200 subjects and offers the only CRLA certified peer tutors, who serve the entire NMSU campus.
“The tutoring program gives resources for students’ academic success in some of the university’s most rigorous courses,” Salinas-Milam said. “Daily, students are taking advantage of the tutoring program. Whether it is through online tutoring, small group or large group appointments or walk-in sessions, students are utilizing these tools to further their educational experience here at NMSU.”
“Marci and her team of peer tutors deliver high quality tutorial services that support the retention and graduation goals of New Mexico State,” said Tony Marin, assistant vice president for Student Affairs. “For example, students who were tutored in fall 2021, spring 2022 and summer 2022 passed their courses at the rates of 91.2%, 86.1% and 92.3%.”
Salinas-Milam was thrilled to receive the certification news and credits the Campus Tutoring Services team with the accomplishment.
“Recertification is every five years so this was my first time I had to recertify the center under my supervision, and my team and myself have worked so hard to grow our services and training to get us to level 2,” Salinas-Milam said. “My tutors are amazing, without them this wouldn’t have been possible, and I am so thankful that they believed in me when I told them that we needed to strive for level 2. Besides peer tutoring, they helped me put together the proposal, work on assessments and evaluations needed and really develop and build the program to what it is today.”
