NMSU’s new Family Outreach Home portal encourages engagement

The New Mexico State University Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation staff believes student success is enhanced when family and support systems are involved in the campus experience. With a goal of communicating effectively and efficiently, Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation launched the Family Outreach Home portal,, in mid-May.

“The college experience can be confusing and we know now more than ever our families are involved in their student’s experiences, so we want to create a connection and partnership with our Aggie families so that we build one big supportive community,” said Liz Vigil, Undergraduate Admission and Orientation family outreach specialist. “Signing up for the portal allows families access to all of that content and information, but also provides the university a way to engage with them and communicate with them further.”

Powered by CampusESP, the Family Outreach Home portal includes NMSU special announcements and updates, local and national news in higher education, newsletters and NMSU student-created content such as a blog called Friday Afternoon Tea.

“I think that families like to hear about NMSU from the standpoint of somebody who’s like their student,” she said.

While many family members may be receiving the newsletter, Vigil encourages families to visit the portal, explore the site and create a profile. The Family Outreach Home portal is open to all families and university members.

“The biggest challenge right now is that we know that not all of our families are registered in it,” Vigil said. “We know we have way more families in our extended Aggie community that we want to connect with and offer support to through the portal, but we don’t have that contact information right now. The best way to solve this is to get the word out and get our families signed up.

“As our Family Outreach Programs continue to grow, this will be our way to stay connected with everyone, so we would love for as many people as possible to sign up,” she said.

If families need assistance with the portal, the Family Outreach Programs staff can be contacted at or 575-646-7568.
