New Mexico State University’s Research and Creativity Week, initiated in 2019 and now in its second year as a springtime event, continues to grow in its offerings and appeal.
This year’s Research and Creativity Week will take place Feb. 26 to March 1 at a variety of locations on and off campus, and will kick off with an opening keynote speech by El Paso-born artist Celia Álvarez Muñoz titled “Why you shouldn't make Art in your Kitchen,” from 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 26 at the ASNMSU Center for the Arts, 1000 E. University Ave. A reception will follow the speech at the University Art Museum, 1308 E. University Ave., from 7 to 8 p.m.
“Research and Creativity Week is an opportunity for the campus to come together to support students, staff and faculty as they showcase their works and contribute to the vibrant atmosphere of RCW,” said Luis Cifuentes, NMSU vice president of research, creativity and economic development.
“Although the format this year is pretty much the same, RCW grows every year as we learn what works,” said Marshall Taylor, NMSU University Research Council chair and assistant professor of sociology. “The community is certainly encouraged to participate. We see this as an opportunity to showcase and celebrate all the cool research and creativity that happens on campus.”
Following the keynote event, each day will feature a number of conference-style events, including student presentations and poster sessions, research-related workshops and musical and creative writing performances. H. Justin Ballenger, deputy director of the Atlanta University Center Data Science Initiative, will host the workshop “Innovation Unleased: MSIs at the Heart of Data Science Evolution,” from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Feb. 27 in the Corbett Center Senate Chambers, Room 302. The following events will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Stan Fulton Center’s Villanueva Victory Club:
• NMSU College of Arts and Sciences Dean Enrico Pontelli will moderate “HSIs and Artificial Intelligence: Challenges, Opportunities, Ideas,” Feb. 27. Register here.
• NMSU Vice President of Equity, Inclusion and Diversity Teresa Maria “Linda” Scholz will moderate “Creating a Robust and Intersectional EID Framework to Strengthen STEAM Grant Proposals,” Feb. 29. Register here.
• NMSU Provost Alan Shoho will moderate “What Kind of R1 does NMSU want to be?” March 1. Register here.
The NMSU William Conroy Honors College will also host a bilingual poetry reading March 1 at Grounded, 300 N. Main St., featuring undergraduate poets and Rodrigo Figueroa, NMSU assistant professor of Spanish literature and a well-published poet and playwright.
Taylor said there will also be several musical performances throughout the week featuring members of the NMSU Music Department.
All events are free and open to the public, although some require registration.
