New Mexico State University will host the 69th annual Conference of the Rocky Mountain Council for Latin American Studies Wednesday, April 6 through Saturday, April 9 in Las Cruces.
The conference will provide a means for scholars and graduate students to share their original research on Latin America.
“The 69th Conference of the Rocky Mountain Council for Latin American Studies features a total of 43 panels and approximately 150 presenters, including participants from foreign countries, such as Mexico and Brazil,” said Iñigo García-Bryce, professor in the Department of History.
The presentations will be held at Corbett Center Student Union conference rooms. The opening reception will be held at Zuhl Museum and the closing reception and awards banquet will be held at the Ramada by Wyndham Las Cruces Hotel and Conference Center, 201 E. University Ave.
The RMCLAS conference will include panels and papers from a number of disciplines including anthropology, archaeology, art history, cultural studies, economics, environmental studies, ethnomusicology, film studies, gender studies, history, linguistics, literature, pedagogy, political science and sociology. Papers will be presented primarily in English, with some presented in Spanish and Portuguese.
“The Las Cruces community will have the opportunity to attend an incredibly broad array of academic presentations in the humanities and social sciences, with the latest research on diverse subjects,” García-Bryce said. “These range from local borderlands topics, including urban renewal in Las Cruces and Black identity in the borderlands, to international topics, including Cuban civic education, traditional healers in Ecuador, and business practices among Chile’s Mapuche indigenous people.”
It will be a hybrid-format conference that can be attended online or in person.
“By attending the conference, the public can become better informed about Latin America, a region that receives poor coverage in the U.S. press,” García-Bryce said.
Attendance is free for members of the Las Cruces community.
