The Associated Students of New Mexico State University will host a presentation from all five New Mexico Supreme Court justices at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 31 at the Hardman and Jacobs Undergraduate Learning Center, Room 225. The event is free and open to the public. The state justices will visit Las Cruces to hear oral arguments of a case involving cattle rustling Friday, April 1.
ASNMSU also is hosting a meet and greet reception following the presentation at 6 p.m. March 31. The event is part of the Rule of Law program, which is dedicated to educating young adults on the court system and the rule of law. The presentation will be centered along the notion of their judicial philosophies, ethics and their professional journeys toward becoming state supreme court justices. Justice Briana Zamora is an NMSU graduate who Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham appointed to the state Supreme Court in 2021.
All students are invited to attend the event, with a targeted audience of students in government, judicial philosophy and ethics. In addition, three students will receive passes to hear the oral arguments.
The state justices will listen to oral arguments in the appeal of State v. Torres. The case involves cattle rustling, or cattle raiding, which is the act of stealing cattle, in Otero County. The hearing will take place at the Third Judicial District Courthouse, 201 W. Picacho Ave., Las Cruces. High school and college students are invited to attend the hearing where attorneys and the justices will be available to answer audience questions, with the exception of any questions pertaining to the hearing.
