NMSU to host public reading by poet musician Oct 23

The Nelson-Boswell Reading Series returns this month with a public reading featuring trans poet and musician Gion Davis in the Creative Media Institute (CMI) Theater.

Hosted by La Sociedad para Las Artes, the reading will begin at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23, and will open with a short poetry reading from Yooko Peters, an M.F.A candidate in creative writing, before introducing Davis.

Raised on a sheep ranch in Española, New Mexico, Davis blends rural regional roots with contemporary literary and musical exploration. He earned his M.F.A. in poetry from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2019 and currently resides in Denver, Colorado.

Davis’s debut poetry collection, “Too Much” (2022), earned national acclaim after poet Chen Chen selected it for the 2021 Ghost Peach Press Prize. His work has also appeared in literary journals, like HAD, MAYDAY Magazine, No Tokens, and more. Beyond his poetry, Davis has spent the past four years touring and performing with the DIY music collective Clementine Was Right. His contributions to songwriting have been highlighted in publications such as Paste and Stereogum

The Nelson-Boswell Reading Series invites visiting writers to NMSU to share their work with the community. La Sociedad para Las Artes is seeking to establish a permanent endowed fund through the NMSU Foundation whose earnings will support creative writing programs, including visiting writers and reading series, as well as creative writing workshops for children in Las Cruces Public Schools.
