The New Mexico State University College of Arts and Sciences will host a book presentation for “What Side Are You On? A Tohono O'odham Life across Borders” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, in the Hardman Jacobs Learning Center, Room 230.
Co-authored by human rights activist Mike Wilson and scholar José Antonio Lucero, the richly textured, collaborative memoir brings Wilson’s life experiences to light. The work combines Wilson’s personal narrative with political and historical context provided by Lucero to deliver a highly original portrait of an O'odham life across borders, illuminating the struggles and resilience of Native people across the Americas.
Wilson, a member of the Tohono O’odham Nation, is a U.S. military retiree, human rights activist and film documentarian based in Tucson, Arizona. Lucero serves as chair and professor in the Comparative History of Ideas Department at the University of Washington, Seattle.
Free and open to the public, the presentation is co-sponsored by several NMSU programs and departments, including the Ph.D. program in Transborder and Global Human Dynamics; the Stan Fulton Chair; the Center for Latin American and Border Studies; the Department of Political Science, Public Law and Administration; the Department of History; the Department of English; the Department of Borderland and Ethic Studies; and the Office of Land-Grant Excellence, Access and Partnership.
