Romero to serve as NMSU's newest regent

Arsenio Romero has been named as the newest member of the New Mexico State University Board of Regents. Romero is an NMSU graduate and currently serves as superintendent of Deming Public Schools.

"New Mexico State University has been a huge part of my life and I am so honored for this opportunity as a regent," Romero said. "I hope to give back to NMSU and I look forward to bringing the preK-20 perspective to this powerful and diverse team. Thank you, Sen. John Arthur Smith for sponsoring me. And thank you to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham for this appointment."

Romero has served as superintendent and CEO of Deming Public Schools since 2017. He was assistant superintendent for instruction and turnaround for the Roswell Independent School District from 2015-2017. Since 2013, he has been a lead performance coach/executive coach for the New Mexico Public Education Department. He has also served as an elementary teacher, an principal and as an adjunct professor.

"We're excited to have Dr. Romero join us on the board," said Dina Chacón-Reitzel, chair of the NMSU Board of Regents. "He is an outstanding leader and an advocate for education in New Mexico. His experience in helping to guide multiple school districts in our state will help ensure NMSU is doing everything possible to serve the educational needs of New Mexico."

Romero has a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and a Ph.D. in educational management and development, both from NMSU. He also has a master's degree in educational administration and leadership from the University of New Mexico.

"Regent Romero is an outstanding addition to our board," said NMSU Chancellor Dan Arvizu. "He's a champion for education in our state and I?m looking forward to working with him as we address the diverse educational needs of the communities we serve across our state."

Romero was confirmed by the New Mexico Senate Feb. 17 and his term will last until Dec. 31, 2020.
