April is Alcohol Awareness Month, designated in 1967. With commencement fast approaching, it soon will be time for faculty, staff, students and their families to celebrate. New Mexico State University’s Emergency Planning Committee has a few things to remember to increase awareness and promote safety if you decide to make alcohol part of your graduation celebrations.
- Designate a driver in your group who will not be drinking to ensure everyone gets home safely.
- Plan ahead. If you don’t have a designated driver, utilize other options such as public transportation, bus, train or taxi.
- If you're hosting a party, make sure your guests are sober when they leave your house and do not drive intoxicated. Party hosts can face legal consequences, including civil lawsuits and potential criminal charges, if a guest who drinks at their party causes harm or injury while driving drunken.
- Protect your health. Eat before drinking, drink alcohol slowly, alternate alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and avoid drinking games or mixing alcohol with other substances.
- Drunk driving will cost you. The average total cost (fines, fees, surcharges, etc.) for a first-time conviction can range from $6,000 to $28,000. Subsequent convictions bring higher costs and imprisonment.
To have a fun and memorable graduation party without it spiraling out of control, graduates and hosts should focus on planning activities, setting boundaries and ensuring a safe environment for all. Congratulations to our graduates! Go Aggies!
