New Mexico State University is seeing an increase in slip, trip and fall incidents across campus — from hallways to parking lots. The good news? Most of these are preventable with a few simple habits. NMSU's Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management has the following tips:
Tips to stay on your feet:
- Heads up, phones down. Distracted walking is a leading cause of falls.
- Slow down on stairs. Use handrails and don’t rush.
- Wear the right shoes. Traction matters, especially in wet or uneven conditions.
- Keep pathways clear. Cords, bags, and clutter don’t belong in walkways.
- See something? Say something. Report spills, poor lighting or damaged surfaces to Facilities nad Services or staff
- Carrying a load? Ask for help, don’t risk losing your balance.
If an incident occurs:
- Call 911 if medical assistance is needed.
- Notify your supervisor.
- Report the issue to EHS&RM, your residence hall assistant or building monitor.
