Staff Spotlight: Lisa Porter, College of HEST

Release Date: 28 Oct 2025
Head and shoulders of a woman

Lisa Porter has been the dean’s office administrative assistant for the NMSU College of Health, Education and Social Transformation for nearly three years, and calls herself lucky to be the first point of contact for office visitors.

As part of Porter’s duties, she assists the college’s operations manager and deans by fielding phone calls and answering emails for assistance. She also works with the college’s students and alumni not just on a daily basis, but during the college’s special events. She also serves as the co-building monitor for O’Donnell Hall, and co-chairs the HEST Staff Council.

“Working in the dean’s office and serving on the HEST Staff Council has taught me so much about our college and the nine departments that make up HEST,” Porter said.

Porter said one of her mottos is the Winston Churchill quote, “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”

“I always remind myself that we are in control of our attitude. This phrase is tattooed inside my brain,” Porter said. “When we pause and take a moment before we react, we realize that how we react to a situation is completely in our control. So, react with patience, react with kindness, and you will be happier for it.”

Porter said she appreciates kindness and positive people, and hopes that’s how people view her.

“I am fortunate to work in an amazing office full of busy people who never let the stresses of the job interfere with the invited atmosphere of this office,” Porter said. “I truly enjoy my job.”
