A member of the Cooperative Extension Service team since 2010, Lucinda Banegas-Carreon leads diabetes prevention efforts. She is program manager of the Extension National Diabetes Prevention Program, one aspect of NMSU’s Diabetes Management and Prevention Programs, known as Diabetes MAPP.
As an Extension Associate II and associate professor within the NMSU Department of Extension Family and Consumer Sciences, Banegas-Carreon facilitates and trains partners, oversees grant-funded initiatives and supports evidence-based programming across New Mexico and the Paso del Norte region.
“My favorite aspect of my role is working within Extension to support NMSU initiatives that advance public health-informed diabetes prevention and expand access to community-based health and wellness education across the state,” Banegas-Carreon said.
A college instructor since 2018, she has taught courses at NMSU and Doña Ana Community College in public health and nutrition.
A three-time NMSU graduate, Banegas-Carreon earned her bachelor’s degree in community health in 2004, master’s degree in public health in 2006 and Ph.D. in educational leadership and administration in 2024. She is certified in public health by the National Board of Public Health Examiners.
