Mike Garcia, research and development engineering manager, has worked at NMSU’s Physical Science Laboratory since January 2000.

He leads PSL’s electronic warfare efforts and supports one of its largest contracts with the Army. Additionally, Garcia works closely with PSL’s student programs to support high school and college students through the Las Cruces Public Schools Work Based Learning Program and PSL’s Classified Ready Employee Workforce program.

“My favorite aspect of this job is the opportunity to contribute to national security while working with incredibly dedicated and talented engineers, software developers, technicians, students and support staff,” Garcia said. “My grandfather served in the Army, several of my uncles and aunts served, and my dad is a retired U.S. Army veteran, so this work is deeply personal for me. Family means a lot to me, and this is my way of honoring their legacy and continuing that tradition of service in my own way.”

An average workday for Garcia, who earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from NMSU, is either on campus or at White Sands Missile Range.

“My days usually involve meeting with our team, students and government partners to discuss ongoing projects and strategic growth,” he said. “It’s a great way to stay connected with the work we’re doing and to see firsthand all the incredible progress the team is making, while keeping an eye on the future. Being a part of something that’s constantly pushing forward and making a difference is rewarding.”
