The New Mexico State University system will receive more than $57 million in special appropriations, capital projects and base funding, thanks to legislation signed this week by New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. This funding is a powerful validation of the university’s vision and the momentum building under President Valerio Ferme’s leadership.

With an additional $81 million in NMSU projects included in the state’s higher education general obligation bond question pending voter approval this November, the total potential investment reaches more than $138 million, the largest coordinated state commitment to NMSU in recent memory.

Ferme praised the support received from the governor and the legislature, saying that it shows alignment between the university’s focus on the value of higher education as a driver of intellectual and economic growth, and the government’s desire to invest in workforce development and creative innovation as drivers of prosperity for New Mexico.

“This funding – spectacularly centered on the multi-disciplinary academic facility GO bond project going to voters this fall – will heighten NMSU’s position as a leader in educational opportunity and as the university of choice for New Mexico graduates. We are excited that our legislators have recognized the quality of what we’ve proposed and are propelling us toward even greater accomplishments,” Ferme said.

At the heart of the bond question is a transformative $55 million investment in a state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary academic facility – a bold reimagining of how learning happens at NMSU. Designed as a centralized hub for shared classrooms and next-generation labs, the facility will house Technology Enabled Active Learning (TEAL) environments alongside virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence spaces that prepare students for the careers and challenges of tomorrow.

“This facility will improve classroom utilization efficiency, promote cross-disciplinary collaboration, and support modern, flexible teaching methods,” Ferme said. “It aligns with our strategic campus planning to bring faculty and students closer to the heart of campus and create vibrant, adaptable learning environments where discovery thrives.”

The bond question builds on that vision with $20 million for critical infrastructure modernization, $4 million for expansion and upgrades at NMSU's Doña Ana Community College Sunland Park campus, and $1 million each for NMSU's Alamogordo and Grants campuses — ensuring every corner of the NMSU system is positioned to grow.

The signed FY2027 state budget also delivers a roughly 4% increase in NMSU system instructional and general funding – approximately $10 million added to its baseline – along with a 1% compensation increase for eligible faculty and staff statewide, with the university actively working to build on that increase through its own internal efficiencies.

The excitement extends to Aggie athletics, where a $17 million special appropriation – combined with $1.225 million in legislator-earmarked capital funding – will fund a striking 14,500-square-foot addition to Aggie Memorial Stadium, complete with executive suites and a new press box. NMSU Athletic Director Joe Fields called it a defining moment for the program.

“This project is transformational for our university and our community,” Fields said. “It positions us to recruit and retain elite student-athletes, generate meaningful revenue to reinvest in our programs, and elevate the experience for our fans, partners, and supporters.”

Construction begins after the final 2026 home game, targeting completion before the 2027 season kicks off. NMSU Athletics will also receive a $9 million special appropriation over three years for operations – a signal of sustained, long-term confidence in Aggie athletics.

An additional $16 million special appropriation for the purchase and installation of specialized equipment will fuel a major leap forward at the Physical Science Laboratory, a nationally distinctive resource advancing cutting-edge technologies in aerospace and national security.

Other investments extend across the full breadth of the NMSU community, from a campus safety project supported by the Associated Students of NMSU and equipment for Agricultural Science Centers statewide to support for Myrna’s Children Village and additional sums for upkeep and support of student and golf course initiatives.

“I want to thank our legislature for the confidence they’ve shown in NMSU’s future and our unwavering commitment to our students, our research enterprise, and the communities we proudly serve across this state,” Ferme said. “The state’s lawmakers, leaders, and voters are our most important partners – and together, we are building something extraordinary, both locally and globally.”
