University Art Museum 2023 exhibitions to feature works by teaching artists

Three exhibitions at the New Mexico State University Art Museum will help usher in 2023 in collaboration with the Department of Art. Two are focused on artists who teach. A third will showcase posters and art from NMSU's Permanent Collection.

One of two exhibitions slated to open in January is titled "Together Through as Within." It is scheduled from Jan. 20 through March 11 and curated by Leslie Moody Castro, an independent curator and writer based in Mexico City and the Inaugural Curatorial Resident at NMSU's Department of Art. The exhibition features the work of staff and faculty within the Department of Art in NMSU's College of Arts and Sciences, where each educator is also an artist.

Participating faculty/staff artists in "Together Through as Within" include: Christopher Bardey, Tauna Cole, Craig Cully in collaboration with Kelly Leslie, Brita d’Agostino, Maggie Day, Jeffrey Erwin, Motoko Furuhashi, Michelle Haberl, Carissa Samaniego, Rebecca Smith and Bree Lamb/Muscle Memory + Joshua R. Clark/Muscle Memory.

A second exhibition running concurrently will be "Ad Infinitum: Artists Against War and Imperialism," scheduled from Jan. 20 through May 20 and curated by Joanna Matuszak, visiting assistant professor of contemporary art history in NMSU's Department of Art in the College of Arts and Sciences. The show will feature war-era posters and artworks from the NMSU Permanent Art Collection in the Bunny Conlon Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery. The artwork highlights twentieth-century imperialism and its effects such as militarization, the nuclear arms race, the destruction of human lives and damage to the natural environment.

An opening reception for both shows will be open from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20 at the UAM, 1390 E. University Avenue.

In February, another exhibition focused on art and teaching is titled "Artists as Knowledge Carriers." The collaboration between the UAM and 516 ARTS will be on view at 516 ARTS in Albuquerque Feb. 4 through May 6. It is part of "Desierto Mountain Time," a constellation of contemporary arts organizations in the southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. Together, they offer thematic programs with artists, educators, curators, activists and arts administrators whose focus integrates cross-border, regional and global issues.
